  Inclinometer

About this app

Inclinometer is a very simple but accurate slope measurement tool that offers a dual, analog and digital, display of the data acquired from the mobile device's sensors. All you have to do is to align your phone or tablet along the surface or plane whose inclination will be measured. If the device is in a perfectly horizontal position, our app will normally indicate zero (0.0°) for the roll and the pitch about the x and respective y-axis (as shown in the picture). This single decimal place means that the accuracy of the measurement is a tenth of a degree (0.1°). Additionally, our app features a nice and big compass (also black or white dials, optionally), which indicates the true north direction and the respective numerical azimuth. In order to allow these values to be displayed, your mobile device must have a geomagnetic sensor; moreover, as the declination depends on your exact location on the globe, your GPS location must be activated to get perfect indications.

How it works

Here is the main screen of our app; the upper number represents the Roll, which means by how many degrees your device is tilt about the Y-axis (a value between 0 and 180°). The lower number represents the Pitch, which means by how many degrees your device is tilt about the X-axis (a value between 0 and 90°). The same indications are present on the analog dials, for easier interpretation of both angles. To the same goal, there are four white arrows indicating the exact direction to which the device is tilted (equivalent to positive or negative values of the respective angles).

The first button (from the left) changes the Inclinometer mode to the Compass one, and vice versa. The next button displays the Settings page of this application, a place where the tilt alerts may be tuned as you wish and the color of the dials can be selected. This Information page can be accessed by tapping the middle button, while the other ones allow you to give the rating or explore the other apps we recently listed on Google Play.

This utility app could be useful in many situations; for example, a driver will know the inclination of his car at any moment. Or, a hiker could know the exact slope/gradient of his walking path. Moreover, the two alarms may be set for a maximum tilt, for both axes.

Compass

Considering all the sensors we can read and how useful their readings are, we decided to add a simple compass to our inclinometer app. When activated, the upper number represents the azimuth, while the number from the bottom shows the current declination - the angle formed by the direction of the magnetic north and the true north. As this variable depends on the exact location, the location permission must be granted to our app.

Settings

If the tilt alarms are enabled, there are two values for angles to be set. When the pre-alert value (30 is the default) is reached, a specific sound will be played. The alert value (45 is the default) starts a bi-tonal sound. For the compass part, you can validate or not the declination calculation. Anyway, if a certain value is obtained, it will be further memorized and this option could be unchecked (useful when your location does not change significantly).
